I could tell my brain struggled to take in what it was seeing – Something that is larger than the Cape Town Stadium, floating in the harbour & that turned round & sailed off into the late dusk – a spiritual experience! Jaw dropping, eyebrow lifting stuff! Made the heart sing with delight but it was also awful to see it leave [6pm departure, Friday 26th March 2010]
I had no idea there was a leviathan in town & only saw it by chance.

The Queen Mary II (QMII), the 2nd largest ocean liner – it is truly big
(Thank goodness for the pier or I wouldn’t have been able to get the whole ship in frame!)
I found my self wondering if it would fit into the stadium?
I guessed it wouldn’t & I was correct

Here are the stats:

QM2
Height: 72.0 m (236.2 ft) keel to funnel
Length: 345 m (1,019.4ft)
Width: 40.8432m (134 feet) (45.0 m – extreme (bridge wings)

Stadium
Height:50m
Length:290m
Width: 265m

“A new 92,000-ton liner, to be named ˜Queen Elizabeth”™ has been ordered and is scheduled to enter service in the autumn of 2010 [Nothern hemosphere]. We have signed an agreement with Italian shipbuilder Fincantieri for the contruction of the new 2092-passenger ocean liner, which will be built at their Monfalcone yard at an all-in cost of approximately $993 million.”

What’s what from bottom centre to the top of the stadium
[In case you’re interested!]

Pitch access tunnel
Players tunnel
Basement level (street level)
Players Changing rooms + safes/ shower room for 10/ massage & injury rooms/ practise room [5m x 10m] with netted ceiling & police station & jail/prison

Press/media area
The legacy
1st level – above the players tunnel – Black worktops and swivel seats – for use after the world cup!
Through the central double door & sharp left takes you into the enormous press room, kitted out with floor plugs every 1.5m

The exterior stairs go up to the podium level [the stadium rests on it [the podium] but actually goes down 2 flights to the pitch internally]

2nd level
– Podium level
– The stadium inner sanctum, entry points, for the ‘ordinary’ people. 🙂
It’s a huge continuous walk way under the second tier seats, with food and drink [during a match] & access to upper and lower level seating

CLICK on image to see it larger

This is what it looks like just as you enter into the stadium – from the dark into the brilliant light – the underside of the seats above & the view across to the press area, where a group of Italian media people are being shown around

3rd floor level
– Veranda & plush seats

The World Cup Media Platform
The block of black seats are uncovered, for the pleasure of the media, at the breakfast press conference given by Fifa. The others on either side are covered in plastic – ± 1,600

Have just been told that this area is the media area for the duration of the world cup. Seems obvious now that I’ve been told! The lower press area, is obviously too small to accommodate all the worlds journalists for the matches.

Fifa move in to set up in May.

Lay the communication cables and take over – literally. They have their own security, called marshals 1,500 of them.

Fifa has the stadium until the end of October – as it will take them that long to put it back to the state they found it in!

Cricky! What are they going to be doing to it?

4th level
Rooms that go all the way around the stadium with 2? rows of super comfy seats – the penthouse level?

5th level
The temporary seating for the duration of the world cup – to meet Fifa requirements

The opposite side of the stadium is completed but this side the workers are busy fitting them.

CLICK on image to see it larger

There are photos else where on this site that show various stages of the temporary seating – just go to home (Left top of page ) then scroll down to see all posts, till you come across them or, do a search – in the search window, on the left hand side at the bottom of the page

Type in ‘temporary seating’ & all posts with that tag will show up [or ought too!]

If you want precise details of the tier names & floors etc., you can phone the visitors centre!
Or go there for a visit!

Stadium lighting seems to have been overlooked for nocturnal digital photos – colour correction is a bit of a nightmare as colour casts from differnt lighting is not seen by the human eye (well, not mine anyway)

[Voyeur – C20: French, literally: one who sees, from voir to see, from Latin videre]

Cick on the image to see it larger
There is No accurate seat number diagram that shows the seat numbers and the stairs!
Computicket’s seating numbers are not a replica of the stadium layout!
The colour coded blocks and numbers are the area where your seat will be found
Follow the lollipop colour codes to get to your seat area entrance

It’s a total mystery to me that the CTN stadium agents don’t have a website with the seat plan and all info on the stadium on it!

south view

[posted 15Nov09]

The building is very photogenic & close up it’s impressive – Green Point stadium, 68K seater – R4.7 billion to build, very controversial – And from Milnerton its way too big [was told that FIFA are paying most of it – by most esteemed cape town council official]

To enlarge any image click on it & to return to thumbnails use the back arrow

I recommend you look at the workers images who have spent over 2 years building the massive structure – there’s a glint in their eye – I think they feel proud of what they have created – swaggerists – init

eeish!

lots of guys hanging from ropes mountaineers at the buildings face - loads of climbing gear attached to them [image:Odette Herbert]..luckily the ledge is wide enough to sit on..one of the high flyers that bolt the building together hanging from a rope..bolting the material to the building outer metal frame..the wizkid architect - very nice bloke - very calm
OH122912a

testing testing - eeish.....never enough poly filler..has to be 50 metres from the ground - its uncomfortably steep to the bottom, up at the top of the stadium - magnificent view though - inward, can't see table mountain behind me
OH00151..rock climbers put finishing touches to metal paint work..lunch time - everyone on site rests - its all seriously strenuous work
in the rafters [roof has 9,000 glass panels covering 37 000 sq.metres] image:Odette Herbert..baby grass - fifa said it wasn't green enough for TV - rip it up start again..OH122997

paint touch up team..seating plastic removal team ..not sure what these men are doing material is still to be bolted down by men in orange

suspended by ropes - i think this man was part of the paint touch up team come rain or shine

he was surprised i wanted to take his photo - i really wanted to acknowledge the work force - visit was too rushed..such charming young men on site all beavering away..the stone mason who moved out of the way when a group of journalists filled the place he was working in..liked the black tie preventing anyone from invading the pitch to get to the other side and damaging the juvenile grass I noticed a plastic bag on the pitch which was speedily removed..this delightful man is the pitch security - to keep people off the grass - its off bounds to everyone

OH122966staer

this was our safety officer - a nightmare to get jounalists to cooperate and not to wonder off and to keep up [image:Odette Herbert]..this man works all day suspended from a rope - he's weighed down by climbing gear..local photographers & reporters, journalists local and from france and BBC team making a documentary on sport ..grey day at the coliseum [latin for colossal?]..staircase to footy heaven only for the alleged footy aristocracy. eeish!
main entrance looks jolly smart

Cape Town’s New Dusk Silhouette: Table Mountain, Lions Head + 2010 stadium
If you click on the image you will see it more clearly
I’m shocked to see what a massive structure it is – visible from 15 kilometers away
.
If you were to drive straight through the mountain you would be heading South for Cape point [peninsula] – For me the most staggeringly beautiful part of the Cape – National Geographic vistas – only an hour drive away

Cape Town 2010 stadium – looking like a space ship this morning as the sun reflects off the white fabric its encased in (Monday 13.12.09 at 6AM)

Tell me it it’s not a tad out of proportion to the CBD! [central business district]

Also looks like a speed boat – doing a quick turn with no wake!

How’s the pink grey smog?! – not so clean the air at the tip of Africa – our carbon foot print in Cape Town is definitely first world!
